About Speaking in the Disciplines

The Speaking in the Disciplines initiative is committed to  the centrality of oral expression in the educational process. Oral communication in the classroom provides opportunities for active learning as students synthesize and use their knowledge, and it prepares students to be effective communicators in personal, workplace and public settings. The Speaking in the Disciplines initiative promotes and supports the teaching and practice of oral communication in all disciplines. Read more about the program

Speaking in the Discipline's Faculty Seminar

Every Fall and Spring term, the Department of Communication offers the Speaking in the Disciplines Faculty Seminar in collaboration with the School of Arts and Sciences and the Center for Instructional Development and Distance Learning (CIDDE).  Over the course of the seminar, faculty members, working in an interdisciplinary setting, redesign current courses or develop new courses around significant oral-communication experiences for students. Contact director Janet Skupien for more information on the seminars and look for the undergraduate dean's letter before every Fall and Spring term inviting applications for seminar fellowships.

Speaking Seminar Fellow Wins Teaching Award

G. Elisabeta (Liz) Marai, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, has won a departmental award for the course, CS 1699: Immersive Software Engineering, that she developed following the Speaking in the Disciplines seminar. The course made it into the top 4% of the courses taught in the School of Arts and Sciences, based on student evaluations and feedback. “I've learned and used so much from the Speaking seminar. This class wouldn't have been possible without” it, said Prof. Marai.  She called it an “outstanding program, and highly recommended.”
