About Speaking in the Disciplines

The Speaking in the Disciplines initiative is committed to  the centrality of oral expression in the educational process. Oral communication in the classroom provides opportunities for active learning as students synthesize and use their knowledge, and it prepares students to be effective communicators in personal, workplace and public settings.  The Speaking in the Disciplines initiative promotes and supports the teaching and practice of oral communication in all disciplines. Apply for Next Faculty Seminar

Every Fall and Spring term, the Department of Communication offers the Speaking in the Disciplines Faculty Seminar in collaboration with the School of Arts and Sciences and the Center for Instructional Development and Distance Learning (CIDDE).  Over the course of the seminar, faculty members, working in an interdisciplinary setting, redesign current courses or develop new courses around significant oral-communication experiences for students. Faculty Win Grant for Multimedia Training

The Provost’s Advisory Council on Instructional Excellence will fund “Improving Undergraduate Education: Instructional Resources for Teaching Assistants (A Multimedia Website and DVD,” a collaborative effort by professors Ronald Zboray (Communication), Joseph Grabowski (Chemistry) and Barbara Kucinski (Psychology).  The project will develop short videos that model strategies of teaching and oral communication in the classroom.

New Director for Speaking in the Disciplinesarrow

Dr. Janet Skupien has been appointed Director of the Speaking in the Disciplines initiative.  She brings 18 years of experience teaching in the Communication department of the University of Pittsburgh and a longstanding interest in helping all students become active communicators in the classroom.

Dates for Fall 2008 Faculty Seminararrow

The Speaking in the Disciplines faculty seminar will meet on Tuesdays from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on the following dates:  September 30, October 7, 21, 28, November 11, 18, and December 2.  Apply for the seminar
