FR 0020 : Introduction to French Civilization

Purpose:

The objective of keeping a journal in this course is to prepare yourself to participate in each class session. Because you will use French to communicate, your journal will give you a « point de départ » and a means of bringing your own reactions and opinions on what you have read, watched, or listened to into our discussions.

Recommendations :

1. Write in your participation journal as you prepare for each class session
2. Include the date and cite the relevant material each time
3. Write in French since it is the language of communication in class
4. Include the following components in your journal (being aware that not EVERY component will be relevant to all the course material) :
   1. un résumé (3-4 phrases qui donne l’idée générale) de ce que
      vous avez lu / vu / écouté / analysé
   2. une réaction ou interprétation personnelle
   3. une liste de nouveaux mots / nouvelles expressions
   4. des questions que vous avez à propos du matériel
   5. des questions que vous voulez poser à vos collègues en classe
   6. des liens que vous voyez entre ce matériel et les autres
      documents, idées, etc. que nous avons discutés en classe

Important Information :

1. You should bring your journal to class for EVERY class session
2. You should keep your class notes in a SEPARATE notebook
3. You should be ready to hand in your journal during ANY session
   

Grading :

Your journal will be collected and assigned a grade for each of the five units of the course. This component of the course represents 10% of your final grade. The following criteria will be used to grade the journal :

1. Task Completion : Do you have journal entries for each class session ?
2. Organization : Do you organize your ideas clearly ?
3. Potential for Communication : Do you include new ideas and questions that you plan to share with classmates and your teacher ?
